Promoting Investment & Innovation in Smart Grid

It was exciting to hear all the ideas and developments in the Smart Grid arena at the Breakfast Briefing on Promoting Investment & Innovation in Smart Grid, hosted by US Telecom in Washington DC on June 21st.

The panel was informative in terms of what are the key issues facing the Smart Grid technology and industry in general and what are some of the successes and setbacks. Seems like a few good opportunities have surfaced and made successful strides ahead. Here is how the panel saw the key issues at the event:

  • What is the significance of recently announced national energy initiatives, including those from the White House, and how will they impact investments and innovation?
  • How has the environment for industry investment changed in the past year or two and what factors account for such changes?
  • What is the general level of understanding among consumers of the Smart Grid or home energy management value proposition?
  • How should issues around privacy and third-party access be resolved and what are the implications of delay or balkanized rules?
  • What are the synergies that exist or will exist to drive further collaboration between utilities and broadband service providers?
  • What are the biggest risks to realizing the benefits of Smart Grid development and what can key stakeholders do to mitigate those risks?

It was clear from the panel that the Smart Grid industry has a long ways to go, although the technologies and applications are quite well demonstrated around the industry now. The Utility and Energy sector certainly sees high value for this development for their customers and all stakeholders, however they need better value propositioning to make the investment appealing among all other capex and opex investments. On the Telecom side, the Telcos, Wireless, Broadband and all other Service Providers/Carriers and OEMs (Vendors) are also excited to be part of this new opportunity, partnering closely with the Utilities and Energy providers but they need to see the value propositions convert into real gains via deployments and in turn the return on investment to become more appealing with time.
.
The Smart-Grid will be an area where Global-i Consulting (http://www.globaliconsulting.com/) looks forward to strongly contributing to in the areas of development, deployment and overall thought-leadership in this evolving industry.
